you do realize that each government controls prices of gas right? A gas station cannot lower thier prices unless the county or government allows them too...they have a set limit as to where they cannot drop too. A gas station in Rock Hill towards the country was fined not to long ago for selling gas at 1.99 and everyone else was at 2.49...thats who controls it the government...

umm no they cannot put up whatever they want...they can alter it maybe 20 cents at the most...gas costs a certain amount...thats basically where the government comes into play. They make the prices...gas stations cannot just say "hey I'm going to sell gas for a dollar a gallon cause that will cover the taxes" when they are paying two dollars for the gas...

They make the prices...gas stations cannot just say "hey I'm going to sell gas for a dollar a gallon cause that will cover the taxes" when they are paying two dollars for the gas... Sorry, had to say something on this one. Gas stations can mark up their price to anything they want. If they charge $100 a gallon, that's perfectly legal, and they government really won't have a problem. People just won't pay for a $100 a gallon. "Station markup - In order to stay in business, service stations have to add on a few more cents to make a profit. There's no set standard for how much gas stations add on to the price. Some may add just a couple of cents, while others may add as much as a dime or more. However, some states have markup laws prohibiting stations from charging less than a certain percentage over invoice from the wholesaler. These laws are designed to protect small, individually-owned gas stations from being driven out of business by large chains who can afford to slash prices at select locations. " Perhaps noone read that in the link. There is a minimum but only applies so that a monopoly among larger corporations do not occur. THERE IS NO MAXIMUM!! Why the hell would there possibly be a maximum of price, and why would the goverment set a maximum for anything that can be sold? Ex: if candy bars jumped up from a dollar to 5 dollars and sales tax is 10c per dollar, that's 40 more cents for the government, granted that people would pay $5 for a candy bar. Rough example but you get the point, more money for the government. Read a little about a guy named Rockefeller, and how he became so rich and then maybe you would understand why there is government interference in a situtation like that. Again The government isn't setting a minimum limit of price to screw over Americans needing gas, the limit is set to protect small business.

right...my whole arguement is why they cannot lower the cost of gas how they please...I didn't say a damn thing about raising it. I believe my line from howstuffworks pretty much said it all. I think it even says something about the gov protecting small business. Did I say there was a problem with the gov controlling it? did I say they didn't control it? I think not...my whole point was to explain why the price war deal cannot work because they cannot lower the stations gas prices to a certain amount because there are so many different details they have to take into account. Sheesh...read my whole comment before you go and try to prove me wrong. Damn you even have it quoted too

Maybe you should read MY post again....
I wasn't talking to you when I said something about raising of prices....
and...
You still don't know why the minimum is set.... because that's not why prices are so high today.....
I quoted something from your own link too...

I did read your post. You quoted me then went on with your arguement. Yes I know why there is a minimum set. That was my point. But feel free to enlighten me again. I noticed you quoted something from my own link. did I say anything about why prices were high?
"However, some states have markup laws prohibiting stations from charging less than a certain percentage over invoice from the wholesaler. These laws are designed to protect small, individually-owned gas stations from being driven out of business by large chains who can afford to slash prices at select locations. "
dude that says it all right there of why there is a minimum which was my whole freakin point that prices can't go lower than a certain point! Thats all I was saying!!! They cannot lower to any amount they want to. I never said anythign about the raising the prices and that they couldn't do it. If you quote someone and then go on your own rant, I mean what do you expect me to think? dear god, all I was doing was trying to explain why prices cannot go lower than a certain amount so that little post about the method to make them go lower would not work!!! once again yes I do know why the minimum is set, I've now read that quote like 5 times...gas prices are high because thats what it is costing the supplier to get it to the buyer.

Finally you make sense. When you say "They make the prices" and you mean "they" is the government, the government does not make the prices. That was my problem when I had quoted you before .
Gas price can go as low as it wants depending on the costs of a barrel of oil(tax, processing, shipment, and supplier greed added in), and that is what you failed to mention. You made it seem like gas prices can't be lowered because the government just won't let it go lower, because of a limit to protect small business, when that isn't why gas prices are high.
"did I say anything about why prices were high?" When you mention how government won't let prices lower, that to me is like saying, This is why gas prices are HIGH.
"I've now read that quote like 5 times...gas prices are high because thats what it is costing the supplier to get it to the buyer. "
See when you say " They (Government) make the prices" and then say something like what I quoted above, you kind of contradict, but now you know.
and why prices are high, its not costing the supplier to get it to the buyer. Its the cost of the buyer to pay what the supplier wants.

well isn't everything based on what the government will allow? I mean shit can't they just shut down whatever they want when they want? and lets not forget back when gas prices sky rocketed in the 70's and all they were talking about is "we are running out...we have no oil for gas" yada yada yada then all of a sudden gas prices started going down because "they" found more oil in some fields? no they keep a certain amount of oil in "lock down" and they can release it to relieve the cost of gas. wait so gas is just given to the supplier? wow...so gas is just gas? I thought you had to take oil and refine it to get the gas out...maybe I'm wrong...but it costs the supplier to get it to the gas station. Transportation? Refinery costs? Drilling? I mean damn is that all free? Its all about the goverments man...Think about, who cut our oil supplies during this war/battle whatever you want to call it...oh yeah the Saudi goverment. Atleast thats what they tell us...but who knows for real. You make sense and all and make good points but your attacking my comments...you can't go lower because all in all its the government creating the taxes, fines and costs or what not for how gas gets from the supplier to the buyer....the prices cannot go lower...thats my point, your last point says to me if we stop buying gas then the supplier will drop his prices because we aren't paying for what he wants? they can lower it if they like, but why would someone not want to make a profit off what they are selling to the public? not sure if you like giving things for free but I sure dont...

Gas price can go as low as it wants depending on the costs of a barrel of oil(tax, processing, shipment, and supplier greed added in) I know all that isn't free, that's why I said this ^^^ "....the prices cannot go lower...thats my point" or "they can lower it if they like" Which one are you going to pick?? Anywho, veering way off from the origional post, the one in which I had the problem with. I'm kind of tired about discussing gas. Sorry to come off like I was attacking your comment, just didn't seem very clear.

ok...that can't go lower as in it would be stupid to do so...but if a place chooses to go lower they can and get fined...thats pretty much it. Sure a place can lower it all they want to, but they probably won't be in business because they will loose too much money due to costs and fines. thats what i mean. Sorry to be so unclear but it made sense to me when I read it again. So sure they can lower it to 50 cents a gallon, they won't be around for too long. they "cannot" as in the goverment will put an end to it soon. So there we go. Hopefully my point is clear now. Thanks, it was fun.
